Pakistan was formed in 1947 as a homeland for Muslims, by separating from India as it gained its independence from British rule. Pakistan thus shares much of its history with India and it was through this area that invaders, from Alexander the Great to the Moguls, came into India. Pakistan today is 97% Islamic and is struggling both with development issues such as a high birthrate, illiteracy, poverty, lack of resources, and with how to combine Islam and economic modernity. While Pakistan has vibrant and modern cities, it also has high mountains inhabited by fierce tribal groups, a number of which want independence from Pakistan and are the breeding ground of terrorists.
