Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, consisting of about 1200 individual islands, most of which are uninhabited.  Once a British colony, Maldives still has close ties to the UK as a member of the commonwealth.  It has joined with the other island nations of the Indian Ocean, (Mauritius, the Comoros, Madagascar, and the Seychelles) in promoting the Indian Ocean as a free trade and a zone of peace. Its economy relies on fishing, agriculture and increasingly on tourism.  A Sunni Muslim nation, it employs foreign workers in the International hotels so the Muslims need not come into contact with alcohol.  For more details on Maldives, please click on the above buttons.
