Malaysia with whom it had joined upon independence from Britain in
1957. Today a diverse nation with four official languages: English,
Mandarin Chinese, Tamil and Malay, it is an economic powerhouse with
one of the highest standards of living in Asia. A
small Nation of 3 million people, it occupies a territory at the tip
of the Malaysian Peninsula about 3.5 times the size of Washington
D.C. Long known as a puritanical state run on Confucian lines by Lee
Kwan Yu, in which chewing gum is illegal and drug dealers are executed,
Singapore is one of the largest and busiest shipping ports in the
world and a model of development for other nations in Asia.
