China is the dominant nation in East Asia with the world’s largest population of around 1.3 billion people and is still growing in spite of 25 years of an official “one child per couple” policy.  The size of the US, it is a rapidly modernizing country with one of the world’s highest economic growth rates. China, once the cultural, religious, and political center of East Asia, with a 5000 year old history, sees itself as reassuming this role.  The present government calls itself the Communist Party but today has a quite capitalistic economic program; moreover, it stresses China’s past history, culture, and scientific achievements.
