Turkmenistan is one of the five Central Asian Republics which were created by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.  It is largely a desert area with the smallest population and the 2nd largest land mass of the 5 Central Asian Republics.  Its economy is dependent upon agriculture and one of the world’s largest concentrations of natural gas. However, agriculture needs irrigation and natural gas relies on pipelines through other countries for its sale; both have been problematic.  Turkmenistan has pursued a neutral foreign policy and refused to become involved in regional conflicts or alliances.
